The packaging leader is advancing lower-carbon glass manufacturing through energy-efficiency projects, renewable electricity matching, and circular solutions, 2026 sustainability report shows.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio, Oct. 21, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —

  • In 2025, managed hundreds of energy-savings projects that reduced COâ‚‚ emissions by an estimated 133,000 metric tons
  • Increased the share of electricity matched with renewable energy certificates (RECs), including matching 100% of electricity use in Continental Europe operations with RECs
  • Expanded circularity efforts through approximately 40 closed-loop recycling programs worldwide and 47 community glass collection sites in the United States

¸£Àû¼§, Inc. (“¸£Àû¼§â€ or “O-Iâ€) today announced new progress toward its 2030 sustainability goals in its 2026 Sustainability Report, which details advancements in energy-savings projects, renewable electricity matching, and improving circularity in 2025.

The global glass packaging leader reported a 28% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions for 2025 compared to its 2019 baseline, driven in part by certain strategic changes to its operations and a sharpened focus on energy management.

“At O-I, energy management is not aspirational—it’s operational, said Chief Administrative and Sustainability Officer Randy Burns. “We have made meaningful progress in enhancing our systems and processes, reducing energy use, and advancing toward our sustainability targets. We know that when we do, our business is more efficient, and we create value for brands that are also navigating evolving sustainability expectations.

The company’s sustainability strategy included assembling a global energy strike team dubbed “Spark in 2025 to implement best practices, monitor performance, and identify energy-reduction opportunities. Hundreds of O-I energy-savings projects resulted in an estimated 133,000 metric tons of CO₂ reductions in 2025.

O-I also made progress in renewable electricity, with 65% of its global electricity consumption matched with renewable energy certificates (RECs) in 2025, approaching O-I’s 2030 goal of 80% renewable electricity. Across its operations in Continental Europe, 100% of the company’s electricity consumption was matched with RECs.

O-I continues investing across the glass value chain to recover more glass and keep it in circulation. The company increased its global average of recycled content to 42%, with a focus on strengthening glass recycling infrastructure. The glassmaker supports approximately 40 closed-loop recycling programs globally and 47 community collection sites in the United States where it’s headquartered.

“¸£Àû¼§ doesn’t return to manufacturing by accident. It requires people, infrastructure, and collaboration to make it happen,â€ said Burns. “That’s why we continue to invest in collection programs, recycling partnerships, and processing capabilities that keep more glass moving through the circular economy and back into new O-I bottles and jars.”

Packaging is no longer an afterthought for consumers. New survey data shows consumer packaging preferences are increasingly shaped by concerns about chemicals in food packaging, microplastics and packaging materials. As a result, glass packaging is becoming a more important consideration in food and beverage purchase decisions.Ìý

The study has insights that brand managers will find valuable. The surveyed 4,046 U.S. consumers ages 18 to 79. According to the survey, at least half of consumers are extremely or very concerned about packaging related health concerns.ÌýÌý

More importantly, these concerns are translating into behavior. More than half of consumers report changing what they buy to avoid packaging that may introduce unwanted chemicals.Ìý

This is no surprise. As we witness a population driven to healthy decisions, reflected by a rise in the use of GLP-1s and wearable monitoring devices, consumer concern about packaging and health is now the second-leading factor influencing purchase decision, separated from economics by only a 5-point gap.Ìý

The survey shows that consumers are concerned about chemicals leaching from packaging and frustrated by a lack of availability of packaging types that they perceive to be less risky, like glass.ÌýÌý

Brands can no longer consider packaging as an afterthought, or even assume parity with existing offerings. Consumers are waking up to the implications of what their food and beverages are packaged in.ÌýÌý

Consumers Actively Avoid Plastic … When They Can Ìý

Food and beverage consumers in the U.S. made it clear: they want to avoid chemicals in packaging. At least half of those surveyed said they had concerns about microplastics in water, food, and air, liquid and airborne chemicals, and plastics used in packaging food/water. Sixty-three percent said they were concerned about chemicals leaching from packaging.ÌýÌý

They said glass packaging is the option they trust.Ìý

  • 57% buy food and beverages in glass whenever availableÌý
  • 64% wish more products came in glassÌý
  • 59% dislike buying beverages in plastic bottles but say alternatives are often unavailableÌý

This data shows that consumers are actively avoiding some materials, plastics in particular, when they can – but they find they don’t always have a choice.Ìý

Brands can no longer consider packaging as an afterthought or even assume parity with existing packaging offerings. They clearly want more food and beverage packaging alternatives like glass. Consumers admit they will still buy the incumbent package, but this identifies an obvious demand gap just waiting for a brand to step in and fill the unmet desire.

Graphic highlighting EcoFocus research: more than half of U.S. consumers have changed purchasing habits because of packaging concerns.

Flawed Assumptions about Food and Beverage ConsumersÌý

Packaging changes are often treated as operational decisions, with the inherent belief that consumers won’t notice the change. The EcoFocus 2026 study shows that assumption is flawed and even potentially damaging to the brand.Ìý

The study shows moving away from glass comes with substantial consumer risk.ÌýÌý

  • 59% dislike when brands switch from glass to plasticÌý
  • 53% dislike when brands switch from glass to cansÌý

In fact, 49% of consumers surveyed said they would leave a brand entirely if it switched from glass to plastic. The generations that are most likely to make the change are the younger generations who represent the purchasing power of the next decade: 60% of Gen Z and 64% of millennials report changing what they buy to avoid chemicals in packaging.Ìý

For brands, that preference is no longer just an awareness issue. The survey suggests it may present a meaningful business risk when packaging choices move in the opposite direction of consumer expectations.

Graphic highlighting EcoFocus research: 49% of U.S. consumers would leave a brand if it switched from glass to plastic.

Food and Beverage Consumers Have High Packaging Expectations for Healthy BrandsÌý

The survey shows that consumers have particularly high expectations of brands who market themselves as healthy. If a brand is rooted in high quality, health, and/or organic ingredients, treating packaging as an afterthought can be extremely detrimental to a product’s reception in the market.Ìý

  • 72% believe products with healthier ingredients should be packaged in healthier materialsÌý
  • 63% of Gen Z and 69% of Millennials expect natural and organic brands to use glassÌý

Consumers want consistency between a product’s promise and its package. If brands are investing heavily in ingredient quality and product formulation, packaging may be an overlooked extension of that story. Ìý

Why Do Consumers Prefer ¸£Àû¼§ Packaging?Ìý

The answer may be simpler than brands think. Consumers are paying closer attention to packaging and questioning the materials that come into contact with their food and beverages. The survey found 59% of consumers agree that glass was the only food and beverage packaging where they don’t have to worry about chemicals.Ìý

The EcoFocus 2026 study found that these concerns are already influencing purchasing decisions, with more than half of consumers reporting they have changed what they buy to avoid certain types of packaging.ÌýÌý

For many, glass represents an option they trust and one they wish was available more often.Ìý

What is Your Packaging Signaling to Health-Driven Consumers?Ìý

As we look at the market today, particularly to sub-segments and brands that are jumping on to the wave of health and wellness, it’s a critical moment to reflect on what your packaging is communicating to consumers.Ìý

Are consumer packaging preferences being addressed by your portfolio strategy?Ìý

Are there product extensions where glass could unlock new consumer access?Ìý

Could glass provide differentiation in the increasingly crowded health categories?

The EcoFocus 2026 survey suggests that consumers are increasingly seeing packaging as a holistic part of the product and brand experience. Short-sighted packaging decisions made as an afterthought to product development, particularly when it comes to innovative products, are costly and often lead to failed launches.ÌýÌý

There are certainly many new innovations to be captured in the market. But if I can offer one consideration – maybe there is demand in markets you already serve today, just waiting for the right package type to catapult a brand into a leadership position. Maybe you can be the one to bridge the demand gap and capture the attention of the consumers of the future.Ìý

Methodology: EcoFocus surveyed 4,046 U.S. consumers ages 18 to 79 between May 28 and June 14, 2026. The study was nationally representative and balanced to U.S. Census demographics.

TLDR: Beer Brands Promote ¸£Àû¼§ Bottle Reuse and Recycling
    • Sustainable packaging is only one part of building a circular economy. Keeping materials in use requires participation across the entire value chain.
    • Leading beverage brands in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador partnered with O-I Andean to encourage consumers to return and recycle glass bottles through a multi-market digital awareness campaign.
    • The campaign demonstrated how returnable glass bottles and glass recycling work together to keep valuable materials in circulation.
    • As an infinitely recyclable packaging material, glass is one of the few packaging materials that supports both reuse and recycling, making it uniquely suited for a circular packaging system.
    • Brands, glass manufacturers, and consumers can work together to strengthen circular packaging systems.

Sustainable packaging has been at the center of the conversation for years. But what happens after the product is used?

Some of Latin America’s leading beer brands recently joined forces with O-I to shine a spotlight on something already happening every day across Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador: glass bottles returning to the circular economy through both returnable systems and recycling.

The beer brands found an engaging way to catch consumer attention, reinforcing that true circularity is only possible through participation across the value chain.

A Message About ¸£Àû¼§ Recycling and Returnable ¸£Àû¼§ Bottles

Together, the beer brands , , and created a campaign that demonstrated that circularity isn’t just a design principle — It’s a shared responsibility. At the center of the campaign was a simple idea: . Or translated, “Let it come back.”

Watch the “Déjala que vuelva campaign with Bavaria by clicking on the image.

As influencer Isabella McCausland points out in the video above, it’s not that all things should come back, but glass bottles should!

Through a single returnable bottle, it can be returned up to 25 times for reuse. But what makes any of this even possible is manufacturers, brands, and consumers working together to make sure that glass bottles always find their way back – and not discarded as trash.

The message of “let it come back carries a dual meaning.

For returnable bottles, it encourages customers to return them for cleaning, refilling, and reuse. For recyclable bottles, it reinforces that glass can be collected, processed, and reused to make new bottles again and again. Whether a bottle is reused or recycled, it’s part of a continuous cycle that doesn’t result in waste.

Rather than relying on a single communication channel, the campaign reached consumers through the brands’ social media channels, influencer partnerships (as seen above), and .

Everyone Benefits When Brands Champion Circular Systems

Packaging plays an important role in sustainability. The greatest environmental impact comes when packaging is designed and used within circular systems. When beverage brands are able to use their platforms to educate consumers, they raise awareness of systems already operating in their markets.

Instead of asking consumers to adopt entirely new behaviors, the campaign highlighted existing opportunities to participate in returnable and recycling programs, making circularity feel practical, accessible, and achievable.

It’s an example of how brands can extend their sustainability commitments beyond product design and help strengthen the systems that support circular packaging.

¸£Àû¼§ Is Uniquely Positioned for Circular Packaging

¸£Àû¼§ is uniquely suited to support a low-waste circular economy because of multiple reasons, three of which are important to note:

    • ¸£Àû¼§ is 100% infinitely recyclable, meaning quality is maintained during recycling.
    • ¸£Àû¼§ is made from materials natural to the earth (sand, limestone, and soda ash), as well as recycled glass. As far as materials go, glass is a friendly packaging choice for the earth and environment.
    • Using recycled glass reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions.
    glass-bottles-endlessly-recyclable-energy-efficient
¸£Àû¼§ is the ideal packaging material for a circular economy.

Returnable glass bottles can be collected, washed, and refilled multiple times. When a bottle reaches the end of its reusable life, glass can be recycled into new bottles again and again without loss of quality. The more glass that can be recycled, the greater the increase in availability of recycled glass, also called cullet, and the less glass lands in landfills.

This ability to support both reuse and infinite recyclability makes glass one of the few packaging materials capable of remaining in continuous circulation through multiple life cycles.

O-I’s Role in the Value Chain Makes Circularity Possible

At O-I, we believe the success of a circular economy depends on collaboration.

As a global glass packaging manufacturer, O-I works alongside customers, communities, suppliers, and industry partners to strengthen the systems that keep glass in circulation.

    OI-building-recycling-ecosystems-in-circular-economy

Whether , expanding glass recycling initiatives, or , these partnerships help build more resilient circular ecosystems over time.

The recent collaboration across Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador demonstrates what’s possible when manufacturers and brands work together toward a shared goal.

The Future of Sustainable Packaging in a Circular Economy

The reality is that the transition to a fully circular economy won’t happen through packaging innovation alone. It requires manufacturers designing circular materials, brands engaging consumers, and consumers choosing to return or recycle every bottle.

The “Déjala que vuelva” campaign shows what’s possible when every part of the value chain works together from creation to consumption of a beverage packaged in glass.

Because every bottle that comes back, whether for reuse or recycling, is another step toward keeping glass in circulation and building a more sustainable future that benefits everyone.

¸£Àû¼§, Inc. (the “Companyâ€) announced that Owens-Brockway ¸£Àû¼§ Container Inc. (“OBGCâ€), an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of the Company, priced a private offering (the “Offeringâ€) of $500 million aggregate principal amount of its 9.500% senior notes due 2033 (the “Notesâ€) at par. The net proceeds to OBGC from the Offering are expected to be approximately $495 million, after deducting commissions but before offering expenses payable by OBGC. OBGC’s obligations under the Notes will be guaranteed on a joint and several basis by Owens-Illinois Group, Inc. (“OI Groupâ€) and certain U.S. domestic subsidiaries of OI Group that are guarantors under OI Group’s credit agreement. The Offering is expected to close on May 18, 2026, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.

OBGC expects to use the net proceeds from the Offering, together with borrowings under the Company’s revolving credit facility and cash on hand, to redeem all of OBGC’s outstanding 6.625% Senior Notes due 2027 (the “2027 OBGC Notes).

The Notes and the guarantees have not been registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Actâ€), or applicable state securities laws, and are being offered only to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers in reliance on RuleÌý144A under the Securities Act and to certain non-U.S. persons in transactions outside the United States in reliance on Regulation S under the Securities Act. Unless so registered, the Notes and the guarantees may not be offered or sold in the United States except pursuant to an exemption from the registration requirements of the Securities Act and applicable state securities laws. Prospective purchasers that are qualified institutional buyers are hereby notified that the seller of the Notes may be relying on the exemption from the provisions of SectionÌý5 of the Securities Act provided by RuleÌý144A.

The information contained in this news release is for informational purposes only and shall not constitute a notice of redemption for the 2027 OBGC Notes or an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy the 2027 OBGC Notes, the Notes or the guarantees, nor shall there be any sale of the Notes and the guarantees in any state or jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful prior to registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such state.
